Quick answers

How to use the deck calculator

  1. Enter the length along the house and the depth out from it. Boards usually run parallel to the house and joists run out to a beam.
  2. Pick board length to match your deck if you can. A 16 ft deck with 16 ft boards has no butt joints.
  3. Choose your joist lumber, size and spacing to see whether the span fits the DCA 6 table. The check treats the full depth as the joist span, with a beam at the outer edge and no overhang.

The formulas

Rows = depth (in) ÷ (board width + gap), rounded up. Boards = rows × (deck length ÷ board length, at least 1) × (1 + extra), rounded up.

Joists = deck length (in) ÷ spacing, rounded up, plus 1. Screws = rows × joists × 2, from DCA 6's two #8 screws per board at each joist.

Worked example: a 16 × 12 ft deck

144 in ÷ 5.6875 in = 25.3, so 26 rows of 16 ft boards. With 10% extra: 29 boards. Joists at 16 in on center: 192 ÷ 16 = 12, plus 1 = 13 joists. Screws: 26 × 13 × 2 = 676. Southern pine 2 × 8 joists span only 11 ft 10 in at 16 in on center, so a 12 ft span needs 2 × 10s (14 ft 0 in) or 12 in spacing (13 ft 1 in).

Maximum deck joist spans (DCA 6, Table 2)

No. 2 grade lumber, wet service, 40 psf live load plus 10 psf dead load.

These numbers are for planning. Beams, posts, footings, the ledger connection and guards all need their own design. Follow DCA 6 or your local code, and get a permit where one is required.

Common questions

How far can a 2 × 8 deck joist span?

Per DCA 6, at 16 in on center: 11 ft 10 in for southern pine, 11 ft 1 in for Douglas fir-larch, hem-fir and SPF, and 10 ft 7 in for redwood and western cedar. At 12 in on center the spans grow to 13 ft 1 in, 12 ft 6 in and 11 ft 8 in. These assume a 40 psf live load and No. 2 lumber.

How many deck boards do I need for a 12 × 12 deck?

With 5.5 in boards and 3/16 in gaps, 144 in ÷ 5.69 in = 26 rows. With 12 ft boards that is 26 boards, or 29 with 10% extra for cuts and culls.

How many screws do I need per square foot of deck?

About 3.5 per sq ft with 5.5 in boards and joists 16 in on center, because DCA 6 calls for 2 screws per board at every joist. Joists at 12 in on center push that to about 4.5. Hidden fastener systems use one clip per board per joist instead; check the clip box.

What joist spacing do I need for composite decking?

It depends on the product. Composite boards are usually rated for 16 in on center or less on straight layouts and closer spacing on diagonals. Check the installation guide for your boards, because the warranty depends on it.

Do I need a permit for a deck?

In most US towns, yes, especially for decks attached to the house or more than 30 in off the ground. DCA 6 requires guards on decks more than 30 in above grade and handrails on stairs with 4 or more risers. Your local building department has the final say.
