Quick answers

How to use the roofing calculator

  1. Measure the outside length and width of the house, or of each section for L-shaped houses, and run each section separately.
  2. Add the eave overhang. It is often 1 to 2 ft on each side and is part of the roof you shingle.
  3. Pick your pitch. If you do not know it, measure the rise over a 12 in level held against a rafter in the attic.
  4. Use the bundles on your shingle wrapper if it differs from 3 per square.

The formula

Flat area = (length + 2 × overhang) × (width + 2 × overhang). Roof area = flat area × pitch factor, where the pitch factor is √(1 + (rise ÷ 12)²). Squares = roof area × (1 + waste%) ÷ 100, and bundles = squares × 3, rounded up.

Worked example: a 50 × 30 ft house, 1 ft overhang, 6/12 pitch

Flat area (52 × 32) = 1,664 sq ft. × 1.118 = 1,860 sq ft of roof. With 10% waste: 2,046 sq ft = 20.5 squares, so buy 62 bundles.

Common questions

How many bundles of shingles do I need for 1,000 sq ft?

1,000 sq ft of roof is 10 squares, which is 30 bundles at 3 bundles per square. With 10% waste that is 11 squares, or 33 bundles.

How do I measure my roof without climbing on it?

Measure the house footprint from the ground, add the eave overhang on each side, and multiply by the pitch factor for your roof slope. This works for any roof where all sides have the same pitch, including hip roofs.

What is roof pitch?

Pitch is how many inches the roof rises for every 12 inches it runs horizontally. A 6/12 roof rises 6 in per foot. Most homes fall between 4/12 and 9/12.

How many squares is a 2,000 sq ft house?

It depends on pitch and overhangs. A 2,000 sq ft single-story footprint with a 6/12 roof is about 2,236 sq ft of roof before overhangs, or 22.4 squares. With 10% waste, plan for about 24.6 squares, or 74 bundles.
