How the math works

10 ft × 20 ft = 200 sq ft. At 3 inches deep that's 200 × 3 ÷ 12 = 50 cubic feet, and ÷ 27 = 1.85 cubic yards. Adding 5% gives 52.5 cubic feet to buy.

How deep should it be?

Penn State Extension recommends a 2 to 4 inch layer of mulch. Use the low end for fine shredded mulch or to top up an old layer, and keep mulch a few inches away from tree trunks and stems.
